In 1974 the Circuit Calafat opened its doors. The first permanent race track in Catalonia was inaugurated by a group of drivers and motorsports fans together with Calafat SA. The engineers, Jordi Xiol and Vicente Gilera, well-known in the motorsports field at the time, designed an initial track of 2,500 m which was later –in 1987– enlarged to reach the current 3,250 m, with the collaboration of the Generalitat Government and the Regional Government of Tarragona.
Drivers such as Ángel Nieto, Aspar, Sito Pons, Joan Garriga, Carlos Cardús, Àlex Crivillé, Carlos Sainz and Pedro de la Rosa came to the circuit which became the home of speed motorsports in Spain and Catalonia at the time.
Just as good stories always are, the story of the race track of Calafat is long, with twists and turns. It is the story of a track which has host unique and memorable competitions such as the Critérium and the Superprestigio Solo Moto, the Renault Cup or the Spanish Touring Car Championship Circuit Calafat. Competitions that laid the foundations of the Spanish motorsports.
Critérium Solo Moto 1990
For more than 4 decades, the Circuit Calafat opens its doors to motorsports fans and those who want to participate in track days to feel like Sito Pons or Carlos Sainz, at least for a day.
Every year, the race track serves as venue for the Catalan Racing Championship of motorbikes and cars, the Mediterranean Racing Championship, the Rally Classic Series, the 3 Hours Classic Resistance, the 24 Hours Cyclotur… Furthermore, it hosts complete training programmes for drivers of the European Junior Cup or the Formula BMW Talent Cup, hotbeds of our new and young figures.
Maintaining the facilities to a competition level is like competing at an endurance race, given the long trajectory of our Circuit. We have re-asphalted the race track, enlarged and levelled the escape roads and edges of the track, adjusted the “corba del vidre”, the Paddock Bar… These are some of the turns we have done from 2009 to 2015. The next round we will continue to improve the escape roads and banking.
